Ancic/Melzer Surprise Bhupathi/Paes in Dutch Final
Unseeded Mario Ancic and Jurgen Melzer (pictured) surprised No. 2 seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes 7-6(5), 6-3, to capture the Ordina Open title in ’s-Hertogenbosch on Saturday.
The Croat/Austrian tandem, playing together for the second straight week after a second round showing at Queen’s, didn’t drop a set in the tournament. They also defeated No. 3 seeds Frantisek Cermak and Jordan Kerr in the first round.
After an exchange of breaks in the first set, Ancic and Melzer jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the tie-break and won 7-5. Both teams won 39 points in the closely-contested 42-minute set. In the second set, Ancic and Melzer broke to take a 3-1 lead and went on to hold their next three service games to secure the title.
Ancic captured his fifth career ATP doubles title in as many finals, the first since Mumbai in 2006, while Melzer earned his fourth title in 15th final. His last title came in Newport two years ago.

“We played a great match today,” said Melzer. “It’s always tough against them. They used to be one of the best doubles teams in the world and now they team up again. They play well, especially on grass, that’s where they grew up. We took the deciding points in today’s match. I’m very happy because I’ve lost a few doubles finals lately. It’s great to win with a close friend, that makes it even more special to me.”
On teaming up with Ancic in the future, the Austrian added, “We said we want to play as much as we can but of course our main focus is on singles. But when we play we want to play a 100 percent as we did this week.”

Bhupathi and Paes were attempting to capture their 24th title together (23-10 in finals), the first since winning the Rogers Masters in Toronto in 2004. Bhupathi is 43-28 and Paes 39-24 in their career in finals. Both players will return to their regular partners at Wimbledon — Bhupathi (w/Knowles) and Paes (w/Dlouhy). They will reunite later this summer for the Beijing Olympic Games.

A tough Opener for Leander Paes and Hanley

Posted by krinish in Sports on 03-01-2008

Leander paes is pairing for the first time, with Aussie Paul Hanley for the 2008 season.

They debuted as a pair at the Adelaide ATP, and it was a tough start to the season losing to Alternates Benjamin Becker and Oliver Marach , in the first round of the Next Generation Adelaide International on Wednesday.

Having replaced Mario Ancic and Radek Stepanek hours before the match, Becker and Marach managed to hold their nerve to win 7-6(0), 7-5 in one hour and 41 minutes. The pair saved eight of nine break points they faced.

This pair looks good on paper with both, hanley parting ways with kevin ullyet, and paes with Martin Damm.

Peas along with martin made a formidable pair last two sasons, winning US open in 2006 and winning a masters series in 2007.

Paul hanley had a very good two seasons with Kevin ullyett, winning quite a lot in 2006.

Not many aussie tennis fans are too keen about this partnership, they don’t seem to like paes, as per few comments I read on menstennisforums.com

Mahesh will be pairing with the long time doubles partner of Daniel Nestor, Mark Knowles!!

Mahesh had a quite season last year. I definitely miss him at the season ending masters. A player of his caliber should be there.

This partnership however looks good to make it to top 5 and eventually play at the masters.

I’m quite sad, that neither of the two have played at the Chennai open last two years. It’s a huge disappointment to millions of tennis fans in India.

Im really exited of them pairing for one last time for the glory of the country. A gold there, will close the chapters of one of the most productive, unfortunately disturbed tennis pairing the world has ever witnessed in the modern game. Things that could have been, if they stuck together.

Here’s Wishing Lee and Hesh a very happy and prosperous new year ahead.

Indian Express will roll one last time at the Beijing Olympics. Good Luck guys.
